Christovam Barcellos is a geographer, Public Health specialist, with a PhD in Geosciences. He have been working closely with Brazilian health system managers since the 1980s and worked directly in the health surveillance State of Rio de Janeiro Health Secretary and the Rio Grande do Sul Health Secretary, and as the coordinator of the Committee on Geotechnologies and Spatial Data Analysis of Brazilian Ministry of Health. Since 2024, he has been involved in formulating climate change adaptation plans for the health sector, serving on the Ministry of Health’s evaluation committee.
He worked in health surveillance in government agencies such as the Health Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Ministry of Health of Brazil. Barcellos is a professor at the National School of Public Health and researcher at the Health Information and Communication Institute, both in the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Brazil. He has devoted himself to teaching and research on health surveillance, socio-spatial inequalities, sanitation and health, and global environmental and climate change, using geotechnologies techniques, spatial analysis, and health indicators. He is one of the coordinators of the Brazilian Climate and Health Observatory.
